Dr. Hans-Peter Jönsson is a graduate chemist and holds a doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. rer. nat.), with decades of experience in intellectual property law. From 1985 to 2022, he worked at dompatent and has continued to support the firm in an advisory capacity as Of Counsel since 2023. He is a German and European Patent Attorney as well as a UPC Representative.
His technical expertise covers organic, inorganic, and pharmaceutical chemistry as well as chemical process engineering. In addition, he has extensive experience in polymer chemistry, surface technology, medical and environmental technology, construction chemistry, and nanotechnology.
He advises clients on the strategic establishment and sustainable development of national and international IP portfolios. A particular focus of his work is the defense and enforcement of intellectual property rights. He represents clients in opposition, nullity, and cancellation proceedings in Germany and abroad, prepares infringement opinions and freedom-to-operate analyses, and provides comprehensive advice in cases of IP infringement. He also represents clients in litigation and out-of-court disputes, as well as in trademark matters, including opposition and infringement proceedings.
Dr. Jönsson studied chemistry at the Universities of Kiel and Saarbrücken and subsequently earned his doctorate. He completed his training as a patent attorney at dompatent von Kreisler. He is admitted to practice before the European Patent Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
He is a member of numerous national and international professional associations. His long-standing professional commitment includes serving as Chairman of the Industrial Property Law Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), as a board member of the German Chamber of Patent Attorneys, and as a lecturer and author of professional publications. He also volunteers in the inventor advisory service of the IHK Cologne and supports selected trade fair events organized by Koelnmesse.
